Track share of topic

Report topics, not just pages. A single URL rarely wins alone — topic-level reporting shows whether coverage is complete, paths are working, and actions are happening where they should.

The Topic Ownership Indicators

Three comparisons tell you whether ownership is growing. Each pairs what exists in the market against what you hold:

TOPIC OWNERSHIP
Queries in the topic universe◂▸Queries you rank for

Of everything your audience asks, how much do you answer? This is share of topic — the headline number.

MARKET SHARE
Potential market (search demand)◂▸Your impressions and clicks

The TAM you validated in stage 01, measured against the attention you actually capture.

PUBLISH TIME ◂▸ SERP
When content ships◂▸When it ranks

How quickly new pages enter the SERP. As authority compounds, this lag shrinks — the clearest sign the strategy is working.

Visibility → Engagement → Action

Executives don't need rankings; they need the business translation. Pair every SEO signal with the business metric it moves:

STAGESEO SIGNALBUSINESS METRIC
VisibilityShare of impressions for money topicsTotal addressable market reached
EngagementQualified organic sessions and scroll depthMarketing-qualified leads added
ActionAssisted conversions and direct bookingsRevenue, pipeline, or ARR

The pairs adapt by industry. FMCG with no on-site transactions tracks store-locator clicks, coupon downloads and QR scans against panel data. A services firm feeds white-paper downloads and webinar registrations into the CRM as MQLs and ties discovery calls to pipeline. E-commerce blends first- and last-click attribution so finance sees exactly what organic delivered.

Role micro-metrics

Each content role is judged by its own signals — inspiration content by discovery, conversion content only by conversions. Judging an Inspire page by revenue kills the traffic backbone; judging a Convert page by impressions hides the revenue backbone.

INSPIRE
  • SERP metrics — impressions, clicks, CTR
  • Organic sessions and new users
  • Topic share of voice
  • Average engagement time, scrolls
  • Clickthrough to Educate
EDUCATE
  • Organic sessions and returning visitors
  • Scroll depth, engagement time
  • Interaction with proof assets
  • Clickthrough to Convert
CONVERT
  • Conversion rate
  • Qualified leads, bookings
  • Revenue by topic

To roll metrics up to topic level, group your analytics by cluster: map each URL to a topic and a role (a content_group in GA4 does it), keep naming consistent, and attribute conversions with a model that reflects multi-page journeys.

AI search visibility

AI features summarise across sources — and they favour brands with consistent, interlinked coverage and credible signals. Treat AI visibility as an outcome of strong topic ownership, not a separate tactic. Monitor: appearance in AI overviews for tracked intents, citation mentions where surfaces expose them, consistency of brand statements in generated answers, and movement after content or schema updates. Gains track with topic visibility — when the cluster is complete and legible, inclusion improves.

Read the signals and act

SIGNALACTION
Low visibility + good engagementExpand coverage and internal links
Good visibility + poor engagementFix intent match and page structure
Strong engagement + weak conversionAdd proof and clearer CTAs
Good conversion + shrinking visibilityRefresh Inspire content and links

Compare clusters period over period and against the targets you set in stage 01. Review monthly; strengthen weak pages before adding new ones; expand coverage where demand is rising. Then go back to stage 01 for the next topic — the framework is a loop, not a line.
